The regulation introduces a limited exception for qualifying generators connecting through standard household outlets. Confirmations from a notified body are required to verify that each plug adheres to the BS 1363 standards. While the electrical safety amendments apply to England, Wales, and Scotland, the product approval rules cover the entire UK market.
The interim standard establishes criteria for electrical design, mounting, fire safety, labelling, and user instructions. It also addresses safe disconnection procedures and restrictions on exported electricity to household circuits. Under controlled testing conditions, representative systems installed on domestic wiring operated safely without prolonged unsafe energisation. The study also identified variations in product quality, particularly concerning export limits and electromagnetic compatibility, which helped shape the final specifications.
Consultation results inform retail rollout preparations
During the public consultation process, the government received 466 responses. Over 85% of participants supported the interim standard, with the majority also endorsing the plug-in solar amendments. Stakeholders included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical experts, and members of the public. Some expressed concerns about older wiring and products sold without proper approval, while others requested clear guidance to distinguish between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which are not covered by the new rules.
Preparations for retail deployment are ongoing ahead of the August deadline, with leading sellers engaging in discussions about compliant products. The new rules focus on small systems suitable for balconies, gardens, and outdoor spaces, but do not encompass plug-in batteries or devices that store imported household electricity. Systems cannot legally operate using the new connection method before August 27. After that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets.
