Michigan’s First Fatalities Linked to Nationwide Cyclospora Outbreak

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan health officials have verified two fatalities associated with the state’s ongoing 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a total of 11,234 cases as of August 3. During this period, 193 hospitalizations were documented through July 30. Both individuals had significant underlying health conditions. Authorities indicated that cyclosporiasis and dehydration could have exacerbated their health issues, but no further personal details were released.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

These two patients experienced symptoms prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the deaths in an update on August 3, noting both were linked to cyclosporiasis and involved individuals with pre-existing health problems. Discrepancies exist between state and federal totals due to differing reporting methods: Michigan’s figure includes all cases identified during its investigation, whereas federal data typically counts only laboratory-confirmed infections.

Federal investigators are still examining a separate outbreak across nine states connected to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, officials identified 1,947 cases where consumers reported exposure to Taco Bell, with at least 98 hospitalized. Illnesses ranged from June 22 to July 20. Initially, the federal count did not include Michigan’s two deaths, which officials later confirmed after that report.

Market Recall Removes Affected Iceberg Lettuce

Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico. The recall encompassed multiple food-service products and selected Marketside lettuce sold through Walmart stores. Retail items affected included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with use-by dates from July 18 through August 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods supplied the recalled lettuce to 27 states. Taco Bell ceased using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Michigan has not definitively linked every case to the recalled lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to list lettuce or salad greens as a potential source. Investigators have yet to identify a specific product, farm, or supplier responsible for the entire outbreak within the state. Additionally, the two deaths have not been connected to any particular recalled item. Federal officials state that the lettuce-related cases constitute only part of the broader cyclosporiasis activity under investigation nationwide.

Symptoms of Cyclospora Can Persist for Weeks

Cyclospora is a tiny parasite responsible for causing cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness. It is generally contracted through ingestion of contaminated food or water. Typical symptoms include persistent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, bloating, and fatigue. Symptoms tend to appear roughly one week after exposure, though this may vary. Without medical treatment, the illness can last over a month and may recur after brief remission.

Health authorities recommend consumers dispose of recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the point of purchase. Consumers should also sanitize containers and surfaces that came into contact with the product. Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention, especially after recent iceberg lettuce consumption. Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of dehydration. Michigan health officials continue updating case totals as investigations at the local and state levels proceed, reviewing new reports as they come in.
