TOKYO, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – On Monday, Typhoon Dujuan swept across eastern Japan, unleashing heavy rain and powerful winds that prompted urgent landslide alerts and widespread disturbances to travel. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest landslide warning for Oshima in the Izu Islands shortly after midday, as rainfall in some parts of the island chain surpassed 500 millimeters. Chiba Prefecture also experienced more than 300 millimeters from Saturday through early Monday afternoon. Officials cautioned residents about risks including flooding, swollen rivers, landslides, and hazardous coastal conditions.

Typhoon Dujuan brings heavy rain, landslide risk and travel disruption across eastern Japan.

By noon, Dujuan was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima, maintaining an extensive storm-force wind zone. Forecasters tracked its trajectory toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto area, with predictions indicating the typhoon would pass near Kanto later Monday as it accelerates northeastward. Weather authorities warned of dangerous winds, rough seas, and additional heavy rainfall along eastern Pacific coastal regions, emphasizing the potential for linear rain bands to produce intense localized downpours over short periods.

The storm caused damage and closures across multiple prefectures. By 2 p.m., the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism reported three landslides in Chiba—destroying one home and partially damaging another. Miyazaki also saw two landslides, with one fatality and one injury recorded. Heavy rain resulted in the closure of 32 sections of six expressways and three national roads, while flooding and fallen trees shut down 16 prefectural road segments across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba.

Flights and Public Transit Suffer Heavy Disruptions from Intense Rain

By 11 a.m., airlines had canceled 384 flights scheduled for Monday, mainly affecting airports in the Kanto region. At that time, infrastructure damage was not reported as a factor in the cancellations. The typhoon also impacted a major event in Chiba—the final day of the Tokyo Game Show was canceled due to the storm and transportation issues, prompting operators to adjust schedules amid worsening weather conditions.

Rail and maritime services faced notable interruptions. Eight train companies suspended 16 conventional railway lines by 1:45 p.m., with another planning to suspend service on 12 additional lines. No Shinkansen suspensions had been reported at that point. Maritime routes, mostly in Kanto and Kyushu, were halted on 36 lines, while highway bus operators suspended 62 routes—primarily in Chiba and Nagano. Local buses stopped 26 routes, though some services continued with partial suspensions.

Flood Control Measures Amplify as Typhoon Moves Northeast

Flood prevention efforts intensified as rainfall increased across river basins along Dujuan’s path. Thirteen dams reached thresholds requiring pre-release actions, with three initiating early water releases. Nine dams conducted flood-control operations, two of which were still active at noon. No reports of river flooding had been received by midday. Emergency teams deployed pumping and lighting vehicles to Chiba to aid drainage and support overnight response, while local authorities continued monitoring rivers, slopes, and low-lying areas.

Forecasts predict more heavy rain through Monday in Tokai, Kanto-Koshin, the Izu Islands, and Tohoku, with totals possibly reaching 250 millimeters in Kanto, Tokai, and the Izu Islands, and up to 150 millimeters in Tohoku during the same period. Officials urged residents to stay alert for landslides, flooding, rising rivers, strong winds, and high waves. As Typhoon Dujuan shifts northeastward over waters near eastern Japan, warnings and evacuation notices continue to adapt accordingly.
