KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – Nepal estimates that restoring areas impacted by the August 26 Bhote Koshi floods will cost approximately $4.78 billion. According to the government’s Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, direct physical damages are around $1.8 billion, while economic losses reach about $883 million. The assessment encompasses social services, key infrastructure, and productive sectors. Floodwaters affected regions including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, damaging homes, roads, bridges, and energy facilities.

In the short term, the government anticipates recovery and reconstruction costs to be roughly $57.67 million over the next six months. The broader rebuilding efforts are projected to require about $4.71 billion. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that relevant agencies have received the rapid assessment data. A comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment is still underway, expected to offer a more detailed picture of damages and recovery needs. Meanwhile, ongoing work continues to repair transportation, electricity, and telecommunications infrastructure in flood-affected districts.

Initial government estimates reveal widespread harm to communities and public assets. Approximately 7,570 homes were damaged, impacting an estimated 32,933 individuals. Damage was also reported at 48 government offices. Floodwaters destroyed nearly 55 kilometers of roads, 37 motorable bridges, and 68 suspension bridges. Agricultural lands totaling 1,806 hectares suffered losses, and energy infrastructure faced significant setbacks, including damage to 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant, and two transmission lines.

Flooding Disrupts Transportation and Power Supplies

Government assessments indicate that about 783 megawatts of hydropower capacity were affected by the floods. Damage to roads and bridges has hampered access for several communities, but efforts to clear routes and restore vital transportation links are ongoing. An Acrow bridge over the Tadi River at Devighat has been opened to the public after installation. Additionally, authorities are removing debris and reopening blocked roads, utilizing domestic resources alongside international aid for emergency response and recovery efforts.

Search and rescue operations have continued alongside infrastructure repairs. By September 11, authorities rescued 13,676 people, including over 320 foreign nationals. Approximately 5,130 individuals remain missing, of whom around 600 are foreigners from roughly 35 countries. Recovery teams have recovered 1,385 bodies. Officials note that casualty and missing person figures may change as identification processes proceed. Forensic specialists have supported Nepal Police and other agencies through DNA collection, analysis, and identification of recovered remains.

Assessment of Damage Guides Broader Recovery Planning

Debris removal has become a vital component of the recovery process. The United Nations Development Programme has estimated at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris in the affected zones. Its preliminary findings also indicate that 11 hydropower stations and one solar facility have ceased operations, totaling a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts. The assessment further identified damage to 15 power projects under construction, with a planned capacity of 470 megawatts.

While the $4.78 billion estimate remains Nepal’s official figure for reconstruction, a detailed national assessment is still in progress. The government continues search efforts, infrastructure restoration, and relief distribution. It has also requested specialized equipment such as drones, bridge systems, testing kits, and pumps. Officials state that the comprehensive assessment will clarify the full extent of damages, economic impact, and rebuilding needs following one of Nepal’s most severe recent flood crises.
