The government set the official price of chicken at Rs461 per kilogram after a Rs22 reduction, yet retailers still charge between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram. While potatoes are officially priced between Rs27 and Rs30, actual market prices range from Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes are listed at Rs130 to Rs180 but are sold for Rs250 to Rs300. Onions exceed their official cap, with retail prices hitting Rs200 to Rs220.
Similar disparities are evident in other staple foods. Spinach, with an official price range of Rs57 to Rs60, sells for as much as Rs120. Farm cucumbers are officially priced between Rs85 and Rs90 but can cost up to Rs150. Fruits show some of the largest gaps, with certain dates priced officially between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, yet retail prices fluctuate from Rs800 to Rs2,400.
Household budgets under strain due to inflation
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reports that annual consumer inflation hit 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban inflation was recorded at 10.4%, with rural areas at 12.2%. The agency also noted an 8.62% year-over-year increase in its weekly sensitive price index as of September 10. Notably, onions surged by 125.52%, LPG by 55.42%, diesel by 45.26%, petrol by 39.10%, and wheat flour by 30.18%.
On September 14, the federal government approved targeted fuel subsidies via the Economic Coordination Committee. Eligible users of two- and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 weekly, while owners of cars up to 800cc will get Rs1,000 every 10 days. The program restricts assistance to non-commercial vehicles and one vehicle per owner. The digital Fuel Pass System, managed by the Ministry of IT and Telecom, will oversee these payments.
Educational disparities highlight broader economic pressures
Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reveal significant educational gaps nationwide. The literacy rate for individuals aged 10 and older is 63%, with males at 73% and females at 54%. Urban literacy is 74%, compared to 55% in rural areas. Punjab’s literacy rate stands at 68%. Additionally, 28% of children aged five to 16 are out of school, according to recent household indicators.
Government spending on education reached Rs962 billion in fiscal 2025, representing 0.8% of GDP. Punjab’s out-of-school rate is 21%. While these figures do not directly link education levels to retail price violations in Lahore, they underscore another critical social issue amid rising household expenses. Despite the issuance of official commodity prices by Punjab authorities, consumers in Lahore continue to encounter significant differences between notified rates and market prices.
