Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo Extends Across Multiple Regions with Over 4,000 Deaths

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has now resulted in 8,376 confirmed cases and 4,042 fatalities. The latest figures, reported by national health authorities on October 5, reflect ongoing transmission in several parts of the nation. This outbreak has become the deadliest Ebola event ever documented in the country, with cases spreading through seven provinces since the emergency was declared in May.

DR Congo Ebola toll rises above 4,000 deaths
Regional health agencies strengthen Ebola surveillance as cases rise across DR Congo.

The epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, one of Ebola’s known strains. The Congolese government announced the outbreak on May 15, after infections were identified in the northeast. By late September, the virus had affected 63 health zones nationwide. Ituri remains a key transmission hub, with North Kivu and other regions also reporting cases. Since 1976, this marks Congo’s 17th recorded Ebola outbreak.

The rising number of cases has heightened concerns about the potential spread beyond Congo’s borders. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized the threat to neighboring countries. Uganda, for example, previously reported cases linked to the outbreak before declaring its own outbreak over in August. Authorities continue to monitor cross-border travel and mobile communities, bolstering screening and surveillance efforts in affected zones.

    Cross-border monitoring remains essential

World Health Organization assesses the risk within Congo as very high, with neighboring nations facing a high risk due to population movement and unofficial border crossings. Strengthening laboratory capacity, accelerating case detection, and enhancing coordination among neighboring countries are key priorities. WHO has not advised implementing broad travel or trade restrictions in response to the outbreak.

Congo’s health teams continue contact tracing, testing, patient care, and community engagement in affected areas. Efforts focus on infection control and protecting healthcare workers. Insecurity complicates health activities in eastern Congo, where some communities have limited access to medical services and laboratories. Public health teams persist in identifying new infections and tracing contacts linked to confirmed cases.

Global support bolsters Ebola containment efforts

Between January and July 2026, France allocated 13.4 million euros for Ebola response initiatives in Congo. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri on October 3, during a visit partly dedicated to addressing the health crisis. He toured an Ebola treatment center and met with response officials. This funding supports humanitarian aid, medical research, and health services related to controlling the outbreak.

Currently, no approved vaccine or treatment exists specifically for Bundibugyo Ebola. Medical teams depend on rapid diagnosis, patient isolation, contact tracing, and supportive care. Researchers and health agencies continue evaluating available options for combating this strain. The recent case increase surpasses previous Ebola outbreaks in Congo, with authorities providing ongoing updates as laboratories confirm new infections and response efforts track transmission pathways.
